Mary Frances Schultz (Am. 1906-1985), Autumn Landscape, oil on canvasboard

Autumn Landscape, oil on canvasboard, 16 x 18, signed lower right: M Frances Schultz, Schultz was known as a Texas landscapist, painting in the Dallas area most of her life. She studied at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York, in the mid-1920s, and afterward maintained a private studio for several decades in Wichita Falls, Texas. Schultz prided herself on capturing the colors and the atmosphere of the southwest, and refined her work in Taos, New Mexico, under renowned landscapists Ramon Froman and Mary Lou Thomas. She signed most of her work with only her initials, and with her maiden name, “Collier.” Schultz continued painting well into her later years, almost to her last year. She passed away in Hurst, Texas, and is buried in her hometown of Wichita Falls.
