In order to satisfy the demands of customers that looked for a comfortable, reliable and sports car, Maserati decided to develop a new model that was called AM116 (Alfieri Maserati 116) . Designed by Virginio Vairo and Elio Mainardi for the Vignale coachbuilder, it was presented at the 1968 Turin Motor Show as prototype of a two-door four-seater coupé to replace the Sebring model. The car was given the name INDY to remember the prestigious victories of the Maserati 8CTF at the Indianapolis 500 in 1939 and 1940. The car is characterised by large glass surfaces, hideaway headlights (a real must for that period) , and a short tail that well represented the accurate aerodynamic study. The car starts immediately, it idles well and brakes properly. With its 8-cylinder naturally aspirated 231 HP engine, it accelerates with a lot of power and shifts all gears, allowing a top speed of approx. 250 km/h. The original metallic light blue paint of the car is in excellent condition with only some small signs of wear. The original cream-coloured leather interior is very nice and makes the car a travelling lounge. The boot is in excellent condition. The rims are original from that period and in excellent condition.
