Lulua masks, like those of the Kete who are close to them, were used during male initiation rituals of the mukanda type. Mukanda initiates are young boys whose father separates them from their mother physically and symbolically by isolating them by age group in the bush.
Circumcision is the first rite of Mukanda, then comes teaching such as: dances, music and the wearing of masks.
The masks are only representations of a certain type of ancestral spirits called bakisi.
