Mask - Wood - Congo DRC - 1st half 20th century

Kifwebe Mask Songye/Luba, DRC/former Zaire First half of the 20th century. Wood and pigments. Height: 38 cm; Width: 20 cm; Depth: 20 cm. Sold with a stand. Very expressive mask which squared mouth is in strong relief. The nasal ridge is triangular and extends until the forehead into a black ridge. The eyelids which are incised in the middle are in the form of coffee beans. These are also painted in black, unlike the rest of the face: the cheeks, temples and forehead present horizontal striations.
