Mask - Wood - Kete - Luluwa / Lulua - Congo - 37 cm
The Lulua/Luluwa masks, like those of the Kete who are close to them, have been used during the rituals of male initiation of the Mukanda type. Initiates of the Mukanda are young boys separated from their mother by the father, physically and symbolically, by isolating them in the bush by classes of age. Circumcision is the first rite of dance, music and wearing a mask. Masks are only representations of a certain type of ancestral spirits, named Bakisi.
