Mwana Pwo Mask Chokwe, Democratic Republic of Congo Around 1930-1940. Wood, bronze, pigments and plant fibres. Height: 22; Width: 14; Depth: 10 cm. Mask in wood, finely carved with incisions depicting scarifications on the cheeks, temples, forehead and chin. The nasal bridge is underlined with blue pigments, the nose ends into a point. The mouth shows the teeth. The semi-closed eyes are in the shape of coffee beans. She is wearing two volute earrings in bronze. The hair is carved with a diamond relief. A veil of woven fibres finishes off the mask. The certificate indicates: "The Mwana Pwo mask is one of the most important masks among the Batshokwe; evoking an ancestral spirit, it is the representation of a beautiful young girl and also symbolises the primordial role of the woman within this matrilineal society".
