Divided into three ethnic groups, the Yaouré or Yohouré people have an art that brings together many influences from their neighbors the Gouro and the Baoulé.
However, they have a powerful identity, and have developed a most refined art. African masks from the Yohouré (Yaoure) serve to influence the forces of nature, which are responsible for the ills of the community but also for its prosperity.
Please note that Yaouré masks are prohibited for women. One of the main characteristics of their mask is the 3 half-circles of headdress which border the forehead of the face. It is a sign of power and wealth. Yohouré tribal masks are often surrounded by a characteristic serrated border which structures the mask and underlines the general harmony of the shapes.
