“Kpélié” Anthropomorphic Mask with an avian figure Senufo, west Africa First half of the 20th century. Wood. Height: 33 cm; Width: 14 cm; Depth: 7 cm. This mask reproduces the stylistic characteristics of the Senufo culture: it consists in an oval, slender on the lower part, with two geometric protrusions opening into a fan on the temples, arched and striated horns dress the forehead, whereas a bird (hornbill) carved in the round, is perched on the summit of the mask. The eyes consist in two horizontal slits, highlighted by two eyebrows, the prognathous mouth is squared. Scarifications on the skin animate the cheeks, the corner of the lips, and the forehead.
