Manuscript letter signed by John Quincy Adams ("J. Q. Adams") and eight other congressmen from Massachusetts (Caleb Cushing, Abbitt Lawrence, Stephen C. Phillips, John Reed Jr., George N. Briggs, Samuel Hoar, Nathaniel B. Borden, William B. Calhoun), to Secretary of the Treasury Levi Woodbury and General Land Office Commissioner Ethan K. Brown, reommending for employment John H. Titcomb

One page (250 x 200 mm) on a bifolium of lightly blue-ruled paper, Washington, 1 June 1836, docketed on verso of integral leaf "Delegates of Massachusetts"; some very short marginal fold separations, pinholes at intersecting folds. Framed and glazed.

The entire Massachusetts congressional delegation, regardless of party affiliation, joins in recommending for government employment a fellow Bay Stater: "Capt. John H. Titcomb, of Massachusetts, has been employed for several years as one of the Captains commanding ships in the East India and North American trade, and as such has ever maintained a high standing for his capacity and talents, as a man of business, and for pure morals.

"His Owners having retired from Commerce, he is desirous of remaining on shore with his young & growning family. And we recommend him for appointment in your Department, with entire confidence that hw will sustain his reputation as a business man with credit to himself and with advantage to the public service."
