The series consists of 32 numbered plates, 3 by Agostino Veneziano (plates 4,7 and 13), the remainder by the Master of the Die (who only marked plates 6 and 9). Bartsch thought that the plates were designed by Raphael, but Vasari correctly stated that they were after Coxcie.

Master of the Die (printmaker; Italian; 1530 - 1560; fl.)

Engraver of the generation after Marcantonio in Rome, work signed with a die with the letter B. Fischel suggested that he might be identified as Tommaso Vincidor. Major series the 32 plates of the story of Cupid and Psyche (B.39-70), of which three are by Agostino Veneziano.

Michiel Coxie I (printmaker; painter/draughtsman; Flemish; 1499 - 1592)

Painter, glass-painter, designer of tapestries; probably pupil of Bernard van Orley. Working in Mechelen and Rome. One etching attributed to him in Hollstein.

Born in Mechelen; 1530-1539 in Rome; 1539 back in Mechelen; court painter for Mary of Austria in Brussels from 1543, later for Philip II; 1563 back to Mechelen where he died (after falling from scaffolding in Antwerp). First artist to transfer Italian influence in Netherlands. Many of his paintings now in Madrid. / Medium: Engraving
