Master of the Parrot - The Virgin and Child in a Landscape
Master of the Parrot
The Virgin and Child in a Landscape
Oil on panel. 50.5 x 36 cm.
Newer research uses the notname "Master of the Parrot" to refer to a group of painters working together in an Antwerp workshop specialised in panel paintings of the Virgin and Child in which the infant Christ is shown feeding a parrot. Max J. Friedländer added a new group of Madonnas, to which the present version belongs, to this stylistic variant with the parrot in which the Virgin is depicted breastfeeding the Child. In both groups, the figures of the Virgin display the stylistic influence of Pieter Coecke van Aelst, who was also active in Antwerp at the time.
Provenance
German-Austrian private collection.
