An almost identical example of this composition was auctioned in Amsterdam in 2003 (Sotheby´s, 13.05.2003, lot 36). The present version, which varies slightly in the dimensions, has been housed in an old Belgian private collection for around 30-40 years. The motif was used in numerous compositions by this anonymous Flemish artist, whose notname derives from a painting in Vienna depicting the story of the Prodigal Son.
