Matched 20th C. Bali Polychrome Pottery Coin Banks

Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Bali, ca. first half of the 20th century CE. A charming pair of hand-built pottery coin banks depicting a male and female couple seated in an elegant, formal manner. The man is shown with a large pendant draped across his neck and wears a blue waist band with a kris sword tied along the verso, white-and-black striped pants, arm and wrist bangles, and a dark hat with a small cone protruding from the top. The woman wears a form-fitting shirt accentuated with white-and-gold flowers, has a vertical red stripe down the middle of her skirt, and has her hair pulled tightly into a large bun on the verso. The man's coin slot rests in his lap, and the slot for the female resides in the middle of her back. Size of largest (male): 6" W x 13.4" H (15.2 cm x 34 cm).

Condition Report: Heads of both figures reattached with light resurfacing and overpainting along break lines. Male figure has loss to kris and one cap horn, and woman has strip of pigment missing across chest. Both figures have minor abrasions and fading to original pigmentation. Light earthen deposits throughout.
