Matthew Stom (Venice, 1643 - 1702) [attributed to] Cavalry clash Oil on canvas, cm. 92 x 150 BROWSE CATALOG (copy link) : https: //www. sfogliami. it/fl/241189/3tv3uqgjenr7xrk8cdpd6ttj35dy417#page/65 NOTES: Publication of the catalog of works from the Intermidiart collection. Certificate of Guarantee and Lawful Origin. Unframed work: ". . . Splendid battle scene between Christian and Turkish militias which, due to its pictorial imprint, taste and typological analysis of the scene, has been attributed - by a well-known Italian auction house - to the hand of the painter Matteo Stom (Venice 1643-1702) . The grandeur of the battle, full of countless figures, is expressed in the foreground with the representation of the detailed central group of soldiers on horseback fighting, showing on the ground the bodies of other leaders who lie next to their horses. In the background of the battlefield we find a castle deep on the hill, while in the valley we see a swarm of marvelous and minute, very well distinguishable monochrome figures. Characterized by a sensibly 'loaded' stylistic figure that brings him closer to Antonio Calza, the Stom, according to Sestieri, manifests, according to Sestieri, "a rough and almost instinctive painting, set on dense figurative masses", proving to be "very effective in rendering the bloody tumult of the battle. the “representative conciseness” and the “flickering luminism” are in progress. One of the most appreciated and sought after pictorial genres during the seventeenth century, together with still life and landscape, was that of the battle and the clash of armed men, canvases in which, to use a happy formula used by Friz Saxl in a famous essay of 1939 dedicated to Aniello Falcone, the fights between armigers came to form a painting "without heroes". Among the forerunners and main protagonists of the genre, Jacques Courtois known as Borgognone, who, after his past as a soldier, arrived in Rome in 1640, devoted much of his pictorial activity precisely to the themes of cavalry clashes, continuously varying the compositions to satisfy the continuous demand for these works by clients and collectors. His success was certainly also stimulated by the particular cultural climate of his time, in which the armed clashes between the various European nations and the strong tensions and wars between Christians and Muslims had contributed to triggering an atmosphere of strong emotionality and concern. In this great scuffle of cavalry - of very free pictorial movement - he presents the typical characters of the production of the Veronese Matteo Stom, who together with Calza, Brescianino and Antonio Maria Marini was among the best and most original followers in the Po Valley area of Borgognone. Here we find the excited dynamism of the action, the bright chromatism, the impetuous ductus and the barely sketched figures that constitute the most peculiar stylistic mark of Stom's works (Battle of the Ca 'Rezzonico Museum in Venice, or those of the Galleria d' Arte Zanni of Bergamo, or formerly in Coll. Sabatello in Rome) . Matteo Stom was part of a family of painters, originally from Val Gardena, to which Giovanni, Giuseppe and Antonio also belonged. The painter is registered with the Fraglia of Venetian painters in 1687, 1688, 1700. His battles are preserved in the Civic Museum of Bassano del Grappa, at the Accademia dei Concordi in Rovigo and at the Correr Museum in Venice. Regarding its state of conservation, the canvas is in fair general condition considering the time of the painting, the pictorial surface is dirty and in patina. We can see - in Wood's light - some scattered restorations and some slight unveiling and oxidation of the pictorial surface. There are no serious conservation problems and the original canvas has an old relining, which does not seem to need interventions. In sunlight, a fine crackle is visible compared to the time. The frame may have been replaced at the time of the relining. The measures of the canvas are cm. 92 x 150. The painting is sold without a frame, despite the work being framed in a frame with a period. ORIGIN: Coll. private PUBLICATION: Unpublished; MYTHS AND THE TERRITORY in Sicily with a thousand cultures.
