Matthew Boulton and John Forthergill made these vases at their manufactory in Soho, Birmingham and sold them at Christie's throughout the second half of the 18th century. This variation is known as the 'Goat's Head' vase and was produced with a wide assortment of bodies, which included, Derbyshire Blue John, white marble and silver-plate. They proved to be one of the most popular vases amongst the aristocracy and examples can be found in the Royal Collection and many private collections.
