Maurice Cockrill RA, British 1926-2013 - Untitled (Nude), 1985; oil on canvas, signed, titled and dated on the reverse of the canvas, 71 x 91.3 cm (ARR) Provenance: Bernard Jacobson Gallery, London (according to the label attached to the reverse of the frame); private collection, purchased from the above Note: Cockrill’s work spanned a variety of styles over the course of his career, shifting from the Photorealism of the 1960s to a more Expressionist approach in the 1980s. Cockrill taught at the Liverpool College of Art, Liverpool Polytechnic, and Nottingham University, and was elected Keeper of the Royal Academy Schools in 2004. Cockrill regularly exhibited at the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool, which held a retrospective of his work in 1995, demonstrating his position as a central figure in the city’s artistic scene throughout the 1960s and 70s, alongside artists such as Adrian Henri. His work is now held in the Royal West of England Academy, the Jerwood Collection, the Walker Gallery, and the Arts Council Collection on the Southbank, among others.
