Work by Mauritz de Haas, set into a beautiful Flippo frame. One of his last Dutch works before he left to the United States. Mauritz Frederik Hendrik de Haas (Rotterdam, 12 December 1832 - New York City, 23 November 1895) was a Dutch painter. He worked most of his career in America and made a name for himself with his naval paintings. Life and work. De Haas studied at the Rotterdam Art Academy and later at the Academy of Visual Arts in The Hague, under Johannes Bosboom and Louis Meijer. From 1851 to 1852 he stayed in London, where he studied English watercolourists. In 1857 he was appointed to the Royal Netherlands Navy, but in 1859 he moved to New York City, on the recommendation of August Belmont, the American ambassador to the Netherlands. In the United States, De Haas quickly developed into a renowned painter, especially of marine works, in a realistic style, in oil as well as watercolour. Typical of his work is the somewhat dark tone setting. He mainly painted sailing ships, among others on the coast of Holland, New England, Long Island and near the island Grand Manan in the Fundy Bay, often in stormy weather or heavy wind, often also at night or evening, in moonlight. In 1878 and 1889 he exhibited at the World's Exhibitions in Paris and in 1893 at the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago. He was a full member of the National Academy of Design, for which he exhibited several times. In 1868 he was one of the founders of the “American Society of Painters in Water Colors. schepen voor de kust van Urk”. Work has an old finish.
