Main representative of the Dada movement and surrealism in France and Germany, Max Ernst often reveals magical paintings where the mask takes a central place, while innovating his plastic techniques, notably with frottage. His reliefs offer an alliance between sculpture and the linearity of graphics.
In 1970, Max Ernst produced twelve bronze reliefs, published in twelve copies, as well as a third copy, as a proof for the publisher. The themes were chosen from the series of graphics published at the Manus Press gallery in Stuttgart, where the artist proposed variations.
