Maya Brownware Figural Effigy Jar
**First Time At Auction**
Pre-Columbian, Southern Mexico to Guatemala, Mayan Territories, Maya, Late Classic period, ca. 550 to 950 CE. A mold-made brownware vessel with a planar base, a stylized anthropomorphic face with coffee-bean-shaped eyes and a prominent nose, hemispherical ears with small perforations, a large brow, and a flared rim which leads to a deep interior cavity. A circular ornament with a pierced center rests in the middle of the brow. The face is situated above a bulging pair of eyes, presumably belonging to a reptile of some form. Covered in a chocolate-brown slip and traces of orange pigment, this is a wonderful example from the ancient Maya! Size: 5" W x 5.375" H (12.7 cm x 13.7 cm).
