Maya Burnished Pottery Cylinder - Underworld Battle

[ translate ]

**Originally Listed At $1250**

Pre-Columbian, Southern Mexico to Guatemala, Maya, Late Classic Period, ca. 550 to 900 CE. A lovely pottery cylinder with a flat base, tall walls, and a deep interior cavity. The highly-burnished exterior displays a wondrous scene of an underworld battle, with an abstract bird straddling the body and pulling out the tongue of a larger, more-intimidating mythological creature, and two columns of solid and lattice-patterns separate the decorative program. The vessel is adorned with bright red-orange slip, and thick white pigment fills most of the carved details and imbues the vessel with a three-dimensional presentation. Size: 5.7" W x 6.75" H (14.5 cm x 17.1 cm).

Provenance: ex-private Florida, USA collection; ex-private Midwest collection, USA, acquired in the 1970s

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.

A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.

We ship worldwide to most countries and handle all shipping in-house for your convenience.

#146408
Condition Report: Repaired from multiple pieces with light fill material and adhesive residue along break lines. Minor abrasions and nicks to rim, body, and base, with light softening to some carved details, and fading to original pigmentation. Nice earthen deposits throughout.
