Maya Campeche / Chiapas Stone Zoomorphic Head

[ translate ]

Pre-Columbian, Southern Mexico, Campeche or Chiapas, Maya Territories, Classic Period, ca. 400 to 900 CE. An intriguing zoomorphic visage hand-carved from stone bearing an expression of fear or shock. The face, somehow both porcine and lacertian, features two prominent target-like eyes, a slightly projected flat snout with two circular nostrils, and a long open mouth, as though mid-gasp. The creature is decorated with parallel striations along its chin and below its eyes, as well as triangular designs on its forehead and sides of its face. Naturally presenting a creamy beige hue, this curious beast offers a fun look into a past culture. Size: 4.5" L x 2.5" W x 4.875" H (11.4 cm x 6.4 cm x 12.4 cm)

Provenance: ex-Estate of Eldert Bontekoe, Pegasi Numismatics, Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA, acquired before 2000

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.

A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.
