Maya Copador Polychrome Bowl Geometric Motifs

Pre-Columbian, El Salvador, Maya, Copador type, Late Classic Period, ca. 550 to 900 CE. A hand-built pottery bowl presenting a gently rounded but stable base, a lower body with 4 protruding nubbins, corseted walls, and a flared rim surrounding the mouth. Highly burnished and boasting hues of red-orange, cream, and jet black, the vessel features concentric circles around the base and within the interior walls. The shoulder bears 3 repeating registers of spot-filled rectangles, pyramidal patterns outlined in black and red, and an enclosed double helix on top. Size: 5.3" W x 3.25" H (13.5 cm x 8.3 cm)

Provenance: ex-Dr. James Dawson collection, Manchester, Kentucky, USA, acquired in 2002; ex-Garth's Auctions, Columbus, Ohio, USA

Condition Report: Repair to large section of wall, with 1 stable fissure emanating from the bottom broken area, and small chips with light adhesive residue along break lines. Minor abrasions and fading to pigment, with a couple of small spalls, and light encrustations within basin. Nice manganese deposits within basin, and great remains of pigment throughout.
