Maya Greenstone Face - Abstract Anthropomorphic

Pre-Columbian, Southern Mexico to Guatemala, Maya, Late Classic Period, ca. 550 to 900 CE. A wonderful anthropomorphic head of an abstract presentation, hand-carved from a pale sage-green stone with ample obsidian inclusions. The bulbous head rests atop a flattened neck base and exhibits recessed ovoid eyes, a compressed triangular nose, full lips, and puffy cheeks, all beneath a plateaued forehead covered with a simple head band. Size: 2.5" W x 3.2" H (6.4 cm x 8.1 cm).

Provenance: private Los Angeles County, California, USA collection, acquired by descent from the owner's father, collection amassed between 1950-1990
