Maya Jade Pendant, Standing Figure in Profile

[ translate ]

Pre-Columbian, Mesoamerica, Maya, ca. 600–900 CE. A flat jade pendant carved as a standing figure seen in strict profile. A large circular earspool, worked as concentric rings, sits at the centre of the composition. One arm bends at the elbow so the hand rests against the belly or torso. A pack or bundle is strapped to the back, and fine incised lines sweep across the head and upper body, perhaps suggesting a headdress or hair. The stone is a translucent, mottled green flecked with paler and russet inclusions, and its polished surface catches the light. The pendant was drilled twice for suspension, once through the bridge of the nose and once through the backpack, so it would have hung as an ornament or been sewn onto costume. In Maya thought, jade carried associations with breath, maize, and preciousness. Size: 2.4" L x 1.3" W (6.1 cm L x 3.3 cm W).

Provenance: private Houston, Texas, USA collection; ex-estate of Dr. Adolfo Gonzalez, Houston, Texas, USA, acquired 1985 to 2005

A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.
