LOT 0081

Maya Jaguar Tenon Figure, B'alam Guardian

[ translate ]

Pre-Columbian, Central America, Maya, ca. 500–800 CE. A crouching jaguar hunches atop a tapering tenon of gray-red volcanic stone, its body compressed into blocky masses of shoulder, haunch, and gripping paw. The head is carved with squared brow scrolls, drilled circular eyes, perked ears, and a bared rectangular muzzle from which the tongue protrudes. The lower shaft was left rough and unfinished, intended to be sunk into earth or masonry so that only the feline crest showed above ground. Such tenoned markers likely served to define territorial or ceremonial precincts, the jaguar acting as guardian and emblem of rulership, night, and the underworld. Bold, reductive cutting exploits the coarse vesicular stone rather than fighting it. Mounted on a custom base. Size: 20" H (50.8 cm H).

The jaguar (b'alam) stood at the center of Maya political and cosmological imagination. Rulers took the animal into their names and wore its pelt as a badge of office, and the beast doubled as the night sun's aspect, prowling the underworld between dusk and dawn. A feline set at the edge of a plaza, causeway, or landholding therefore carried more than decorative weight: it marked the boundary and threatened whatever might cross it.

Tenoned sculpture is a hallmark of Maya architectural practice, where hachas, facade masks, and marker stones were cut with unfinished shanks for insertion into masonry or ground. The deliberate contrast here between the finished crest and the rough shaft is a functional signature of that tradition, and a useful indicator that the piece was made to be seen only from the waist up.
