Finely illustrated with chromolithographic plates of the costumes of the Scottish clans. Originally published in 24 parts in 1845-7, this is the second edition published 10 years later. Abbey Life 426 (first edition); Tooley Coloured Plates 323.

2 volumes, folio (367 x 263mm). Lithographic dedication partially printed in gold, 2 chromolithographic frontispieces showing the arms of the clans and 72 chromolithographic plates, all finished by hand (occasional light spotting, one plate trimmed, 2 plates with some fraying at edges one of which with associated repairs on verso). Green gilt-stamped morocco for Kronheim and Skirving, covers elaborately panelled with wide borders containing round shields with crossed broadswords and large foliate cornerpieces, enclosing large central arms of Scotland, gilt spines, turn-ins and edges (endpapers renewed, joints expertly repaired).
