Medieval Afghan Ghurid Pottery Dish w/ Bird

Central Asia, central Afghanistan, Jam in Ghur province, Ghurid Dynasty, ca. 12th to 13th century CE. A graceful ceramic bowl with a shallow basin, rounded base, and unpronounced rim. The interior and exterior are covered in a dark red-brown glaze, with black manganese motifs on the interior showing a long-beaked bird on a field with circles and curved lines forming a border around the bird's seated body. Birds of all kinds have been a constant in Islamic art since its inception, and were popular both in secular and religious art. In the latter, they symbolized the soul waiting to enter paradise. Size: 3.5" W x 1" H (8.9 cm x 2.5 cm)

Provenance: private California, USA collection, by descent, moved from Germany in 1997, originally collected in the 1970s in Hamburg, Germany
