Medieval Islamic Mamluk Glass Sprinkler Flask with Trailed Neck Loops
Near East, Syria or Egypt, Islamic, Mamluk period, ca. 1100–1400 CE. A free-blown pale glass sprinkler flask with a compressed globular body and a tall, tapering neck that narrows to a small opening, allowing liquid to be dispensed in drops. The glass is nearly colorless with a faint green tint, and the surface carries frosted, earthy weathering. Thin trails of the same glass are applied where the neck meets the shoulder and pinched into small loops on either side. Sprinkler flasks of this type were used to dispense rosewater and other scented liquids. Size: 4.25" H x 2.5" W x 1.5" D (10.8 cm H x 6.4 cm W x 3.8 cm D); On included custom stand: 5" H (12.7 cm H).
Medieval Islamic glassmakers in Syria and Egypt made large numbers of small sprinkler flasks. Their necks were deliberately narrowed or nearly closed so that the contents could only be shaken out a little at a time. In the Islamic world, sprinkling scented water was part of hospitality, personal grooming, and devotional practice, and glass, metal, and ceramic sprinklers all served the purpose.
