Melchior de Hondecoeter (1636-1695)
A hunting still life with hare, phaesant and kingfishers. Signed on the stone ledge. There are several versions of this composition, of which this canvas most likely is the primary example due to its superior quality. Another signed version (canvas 98 x 82 cm) was auctioned in Stockholm in 1966 (Bukowski 9-12 november, lot 148) and was subsequently with Kunsthandel Cramer in 1967. Two unsigned copies, once attributed to Melchior's uncle Jan Weenix, were presumably not executed by Melchior himself (Michaelis Collection, Cape Town (South-Africa), inv./cat.nr 14/28; and auction Vienna, Dorotheum, 3-6 december 1957, cat. no. 123).
Afmeting: Olieverf op doek 100 x 83 cm.
