Mende Bundu Wood Mask. This mask is an altar piece in a bird-like form on a post, featuring a head with a clearly articulated face and piercing eyes. The body lacks details, except for two pigmented vertical carvings on the neck. Made for ritual use, specifically involving the initiation of girls into womanhood. Measures approximately 11" x 8" x 9" (without base). In good condition with wear appropriate for age and use. This item originates from the estate of John A. Williams, a distinguished philanthropist and renowned collector. Mr. Williams and his partner Dewitt Hart were influential members of San Francisco's art society and were celebrated for their discerning taste in modern, ethnographic, and fine art. Over the years, they hosted numerous exhibitions in their home, showcasing their prestigious collection to appreciative audiences. All proceeds of items from this estate benefit the Hart Williams Rainbow Fund, a nonprofit working with the LGBTQIA+ community in the San Francisco Bay Area.
