Meshkin Long Rug

[ translate ]

Second half 19th century, 380 x 106 cm, North West Persia, Azerbaijan

Meshkin rugs were made in the surrounding villages of Meshkin Shar, a small town situated between Tabriz and Ardabil. Antique examples have now almost completely disappeared from the market. The white field of this Meshkin is decorated with six vertical rows of small rounded trees placed upside down. The narrow, dark red main border contains slanting rhomboids, each decorated with two hooks resembling claws, and box and cone shapes inserted between them. The superb glossy pile wool greatly enhances the brilliance of the colours. – Very good condition, original finishes all around.
