Mesopotamia Early Dynastic Copper Axe Head

Ancient Near East, Mesopotamia, Sumer, Early Dynastic Period, ca. 2600 to 2350 BCE. A forged copper axe head of a minimalist, sturdy form. A vertical blade edge protrudes from a thick shoulder, and all is connected to a socketed shaft that could be mounted on a wooden pole. Pairs of raised bars outline the diamond-shaped shaft profile, and layers of green and russet patina envelop this ancient armament. Size: 3.625" L x 1.125" W x 2.5" H (9.2 cm x 2.9 cm x 6.4 cm); 4.5" H (11.4 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: ex-estate of John Piscopo, San Diego, California, USA, acquired in March 2001; ex-Artemission, London, UK
