Mesopotamian Akkadian Marble Cylinder Seal - Ibexes

Ancient Near East, Mesopotamia, Akkadian Empire, ca. 2334 to 2154 BCE. A beautifully preserved marble cylinder seal featuring a deeply carved scene of a hunt: figures and animals chase each other around the cylinder's curved sides, including rampant and rearing ibexes. The iconography of the ibex was very popular in the ancient Near East - replicated in gold, bronze, and stone. Their meaning: virility, and by extension health, strength, and power. Size: 0.8" W x 1.05" H (2 cm x 2.7 cm)

Provenance: ex-New York, USA private collector acquired from David Liebert, Queens, New York, USA in the early 2000s
