Rare Mesopotamian / Babylonian Lapis Lazuli Cylinder Seal

Circa 1st milllennium BC
Carved from lapis lazuli, this cylinder seal features three rectangular panels with inscriptions, accompanied by figures positioned alongside, including one standing on a baseline and another standing above a lion. The central figure faces a crescentic moon.
Cylinder seals are primarily associated with Mesopotamian civilizations. These small, cylindrical objects, typically made of stone or other durable materials, bear intricate engravings that serve as both artistic expressions and practical tools. Originating in Sumer around 3500 BC, cylinder seals played a crucial role in administrative and economic transactions, serving as personal signatures for individuals in various aspects of daily life. The cylindrical shape allowed for easy rolling impressions onto clay or other soft materials, creating a unique and identifiable mark. Beyond their utilitarian function, these seals also depict mythological scenes, religious motifs, and historical narratives, offering invaluable insights into the cultural and social contexts of ancient Mesopotamia.

Dimensions: 30mm x 10mm; weight 7g
Provenance: Private UK Ancient Art Collection formerly acquired on the UK, European, and USA Art Markets from pre-1960s Collections.
