Mesopotamian Marble Amulet - Ram Form

Ancient Near East, Mesopotamia, ca. 1st millennium BCE. A charming amulet carved from yellow-white marble depicting a petite ram standing with a stocky body atop fused legs. The animal raises its head to reveal a nubbin snout and a slightly protruding brow as well as a pair of majestically curled horns. Rams in Mesopotamian artistry were usually representative of fertility and virility but also had connotations pertaining to Inanna, the goddess of love and vegetation. Size: 1.6" L x 1.3" H (4.1 cm x 3.3 cm); 1.7" H (4.3 cm) on included custom stand.
