Old Babylonian haematite cylinder seal with seated king with three figures in attendance. | Old Babylonian. Circa 2000-1600 B. C.

Mesopotamian seal cylinders were engraved with motifs depicting the gods or containing symbols of power. They were almost always used to imprint these motifs on clay, but they are also found in royal tombs.
These graphic motifs are recessed in the seal so that they can be stamped into the clay by rolling the cylinder, for which purpose a ring, a shaft or a string was used across its trepanned axis. The images depicted on cylindrical stamps were mainly based on themes, often sociological or religious. They presented ideas about society in pictographic and textual form.
