Mesopotamian clay plaque with an erotic scene, 13 x 6,5 cm. Exhibited at Ifergan Museum

[ translate ]

This plaque belongs to a very common Babylonian typology, the erotic tablets. These tablets were made in large numbers, using moulds, and found inside homes, temples and tombs. The same decorative pattern is repeated in all of them: the central part is decorated with a sex scene between a man and a woman, while the edges of the piece are delimited by a decoration that delimits the scene. In this case, a kind of column seems to border the couple. The scene on this item has been interpreted as a representation of the sexual union between the goddess Inanna and Dumuzi or even as the festival of hierogamy, a ceremony in which a king and a priestess were ritually united. Provenance: Aweidah Gallery, Israel, 2006 Previous owner: Documentation at Aweidah Gallery Export authorization from the Israel Antiquities Authority No. 2735 with date 13/03/2006 Exhibited: Ifergan Collection, Málaga (2018-2020) Statement seen by Catawiki.
