The Sikhote-Aline meteorite is an iron meteorite that fell in 1947 in the Sikhote-Aline mountain range in eastern Siberia. This fall is unique in the history of meteorites, given the 70 tons which would have survived its fiery passage through the earth's atmosphere

On February 12, 1947 around 10: 30 a. m. , witnesses from the Sikhote-Aline mountain range in the USSR observed a body brighter than the Sun coming from the north and descending at an angle of 41°. Entering the atmosphere at a speed of 14 km/s, the meteorite began to disintegrate. At a height of 5. 6 km, the largest mass seemed to explode violently. The sharp flash and deafening shock of the fall were observable within a radius of 300 km around the point of impact. A trail of smoke, with an estimated length of 32 km, remained in the sky for several hours
