The 50 Peso gold coin is considered the 'coin of the century' (centenario) by Mexicans, because it was struck for the first time in 1921 at the occasion of the Centennial of Mexican independence from Spain. Mintage of gold 50 Peso coins was suspended in 1931 due to the worldwide economic crisis. The mintage started back casually in 1943 to respond to the strong demand for gold coins that existed at that time. OBVERSE: The obverse of the gold 50 peso coin symbolises the winged Victory found on the monument of the Angel of Independence, with the legendary volcanoes Iztaccíhuatl y Popocatépetl in the background. REVERSE: The reverse of the 50 peso gold coin represents the emblem of Mexico symbolised by an eagle on a cactus holding a snake in its beak. Inscription: ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS
