Ferdinand VII gold 8 Escudos 1819 Mo-JJ MS62 NGC, Mexico City mint, KM161, Cal-1798, Onza-1270. Boasting a noticeably fine strike despite what must have been dies very near the end of their life--die rust emerging over both sides, though especially concentrated on the reverse, where numerous die cracks also appear, all features which mint workers clearly tried to mask through a heavy polishing of the dies. Nevertheless, the final product can only be regarded as eye-catching, a fact verified by a survey of the NGC census, where only one MS63 ranks finer.
