Meyer Lansky 3pp ALS re: October War, Kissinger & "moral science"; PSA and Beckett
ALS
A lengthy autograph letter from American mobster Meyer Lansky (1902-1983) to Israeli confidante Joseph "Yushki" Sheiner. 3pp, measuring 7.25" x 10.5" & 7.25" x 5.5", n.p. [Miami, FL], May 29, 1974. Signed at the conclusion of page 2 as "Meyer", he writes to Sheiner two years after his deportation from Israel. Within, Lansky makes several references to other Israeli associates, asking Sheiner to deliver messages on his behalf. He goes on to reference the previous year's October War and Henry Kissinger's involvement in diplomacy talks, afterwards decrying the lack of advancement in what he describes as "human science and moral science." Scattered age toning and moderate handling creases throughout, with negligible corner loss in the lower right of page 1. Two isolated puncture holes present on the right side of each page, affecting only a few letters of text. Otherwise, very good. Accompanied by letters of authenticity from PSA and Beckett.
In part:
"About the debt with Azriel: The debt should be paid to him, he is the one that is the responsible party. I remember well, telling me that you used the money for business and telling you not to sell the business. I'm not asking you to do that now. I would appreciated if you tell Azriel to know that and the amount you were left with.
I can't for the love of me understand what you state in your letter that Joe saw the little man in Israel and the man put in a claim. Why didn't he send this bastard to me with his claim. I would pay his plane fare. He should have straightened everything out in Israel held him until he received everything back. That bastard knew well that he wasn't sure of himself. You know better than anyone else how doubtful I was; that was the reason for you going first to make sure that all was well. I'm enclosing a note to Joe pertaining to the incident. Knowing Joe like I do I can't believe Joe listening to him.
Will you be kind enough to let me know if Yorum is in Israel or not. I have been calling his home and sent a few letters and no response. He may be on vacation or duty but if he was on duty Daphna would've received his mail?
I haven't heard from Shlomo anymore is he back in Israel? If so give my regards to him and his parents.
My brother should be in Israel July 10 no later than July 15. It is important that he sees Yorum if Yorum can't be there let him know where he can see him? It isn't important for him to see him in Israel. Europe is just as well.
My problem is still pending. It is long overdue. Truthfully that is the reason for delayed letter. I thought an answer would come any day. It will.
I'm kept informed on Israel from friends there; friends visiting; Jerusalem Post that I receive weekly. What they are settling for now, not belittling credit due Kissinger could have been a talking point prior to Oct. War.
The old grew to [sic] old. They should have retired a year before. If my note to Joe will cause any friction for you, destroy it.
I grow sad when I think of your children and every bodies children; the responsibility that is on them. I just hope that they put together a better world. My age wasn't helpful at all. Plenty advancement in science- nothing in human science or moral science.
Let me hear from you soon. Our fondest wishes to all of you."
Previously in 1970, Lansky fled to Israel to evade charges of federal tax evasion, but was later deported by the Israeli government in 1972. It was Joseph Sheiner, former Security Director to David Ben-Gurion, who accompanied Lansky on his infamous flight from Israel to Switzerland, and then to South America. Unable to secure asylum, Lansky ultimately returned to Miami, where he was promptly arrested by the FBI on an outstanding warrant. While he was acquitted in 1974, he was never allowed
