Michael Ancher (b. Bornholm 1849, d. Skagen 1927)

The fisherman Christoffer leans against a boat on the beach at Skagen in sunlight. Signed M. A. Oil on canvas. 51 × 60 cm.

Exhibited: Herning Kongrescenter, “Skagen i Herning”, 2002 no. 24.

Provenance: Winkel & Magnussen auction 349, 1948 no. 5, ill. p. 29. Bruun Rasmussen Vejle auction 111, 2007 no. 18, ill. p. 13.

In the profile portrait of Christoffer on the beach in sunlight, the sea shows its calm side, while the clouds, that are rising, tell of the changeability of nature and the ever-lurking danger of shipwreck. A fitting backdrop for the portrait of a fisherman. Ancher's use of backlighting gives him ample opportunity to play with the almost violet shadows, which testify to an inspiration from the plein air painting of the French Impressionists, while the almost photographic cropping of the picture also tells of new trends from abroad.

Category: Paintings

Additional Remarks: Please note: The item is subject to the Anti-Money Laundering Act. In the event of a hammer price of DKK 50,000 or more, including buyer’s premium, the buyer must submit a copy of a valid photo ID and proof of address in order to collect the item.
