Michael Willmann (1630 - 1706), "Saint Margaret"Oil on canvas, re-lined. Depiction of Saint Margaret of Antioch, surrounded by clouds. The chained dragon at her feet on the right, being warded off with her crucifix. A putto above her, holding the martyr's crown over her head. Restored in places. In a modern, partially silver-plated, wooden frame. Dimensions including frame 180 x 136.5 cm.Michael Willmann (1630 in Königsberg - 1706 in Leubus, Silesia) was one of the most important German baroque painters of his time. After spending two years studying in the Netherlands around 1650, he returned to Königsberg and qualified as a master craftsman. Over the following years, he created the famous frescoes in the Cistercian monastery in Leubus and was appointed electoral court painter in Berlin in 1657. He settled permanently in Leubus in 1660, where he continued to work on the monastery church.Condition: II
