Michele Gamberini (Cento, 1840 - Genoa, 1892) , Portrait of a man, oil on canvas, dimensions of the work 59. 5 x 48. 5 cm, dimensions including the frame 87 x 71 cm, signed and dated 1876 lower center .

Gamberini, born in 1840 in Cento (Ferrara) , home of Guercino, trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bologna, looking in particular at the lessons of the great ancient masters. He made his debut at a very young age by presenting the painting Waterfall in 1855. In 1856 he won the painting prize of the Bolognese Academy with the painting "Samson breaking the constraints", today in the collections of the Civic Museums of Bologna. He dedicated himself to portraits and works with religious themes, such as Jesus Christ blessing children, exhibited in Florence in 1859.
Probably at the beginning of the 80s he moved to Genoa, where he established a shop in via San Donato, a few steps from Palazzo Ducale. In that decade he turned to genre painting (The Governess and II Rest, exhibited in Genoa in 1880) and to painting of historical subjects, in a post-Risorgimento key (Christopher Columbus, disappointed in his hopes, leaves the royal room, exhibited in Genoa in 1892) .

Work in good condition. Small tear repaired with a patch on the back and two or three other minimal stitches restored. Some stains and deposits on the pictorial surface.
