Michiel Jansz van Miereveldt (1567-1641), Circle of - Portrait of possibly the Stadholder of Friesland and Groningen Henry Casimir II of Nassau-Dietz

Very detailed portrait presumably depicting
Prince Hendrik Casimir II from the House of Orange, Nassau-Dietz
With Flemish Baroque origin

He was born in The Hague, the eldest son of Willem Frederik of Nassau-Dietz and Countess Albertine Agnes of Nassau, daughter of Frederick Henry, Prince of Orange, stadtholder of Holland, Zeeland, Utrecht, Guelders, and Overijssel. When his father, a member of the branch of Nassau-Dietz, died in 1664, he was made stadtholder of Friesland and Groningen (under guardianship of his mother as he was then seven years old) . In 1675, Friesland voted to make its stadtholdership hereditary in the house of Nassau-Dietz. Hendrik Casimir II was therefore the first Friesian stadtholder.

Oil on canvas, doubled/relined
Retouches, as seen in the IV-light
Old restorations, retouches to the ruff, craquelure, visible in the images, in good state of preservation all considered. Definitely by a master’s hand

The painting is hand signed and dated 1696
Signature is indistinctive.
There are inscriptions a verso, “Mechelen” supposedly.

Provenance: Comes from estate sale, Private European collection

Last images indicate similarities and comparisons, the cavalry armor can be traced to Maurits, prince of Orange (1567-1625) , Netherlandish, ca. 1590/95
