Michoacan Pottery Standing Pretty Lady Figure

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Michoacan, Protoclassic period, ca. 500 to 100 BCE. A hand-built pottery "pretty lady" figure with a highly-burnished surface. She stands upon delineated legs, has a portly abdomen, perky breasts, and attenuated arms, and is adorned with large red-painted ear ornaments and a medallion hanging from a red-painted necklace strand around her neck. What's more, impressed diamond-shaped eyes, a projecting nose, and a gaping mouth topped by a centrally-parted coiffure with incised locks and neatly-arranged bangs comprise her expressive countenance. Size: 4" H (10.2 cm); 4.5" H (11.4 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private Southern California, USA collection, acquired in the 1970s to mid-1980s
