[ translate ]

The hands of Thai Royal Buddha are facing outward in Abhaya Mudra the gesture of reassurance or "calming the waters". A gorgeous Siamese (present day Thailand) standing Buddha, Rattanakosin dating from the last half of the 19th to the first half of the 20th century. The beauty, grace and subtlety of facial expression is notable. It reveals a serene countenance commensurate with the spiritual aims of Buddhist life and practice. The careful level of detail throughout the casting surpasses many. This elaborate and handsomely detailed bronze is exceptionally large and heavy at over 27 inches (69cm) and weighs about 17. 2 pounds (7. 805 kg) . Weighted base fill of rock plaster has cracks. A rare complete example without damage to the crown. There is loss to applied patina as shown, most of the gold is gone on the back of his robe. There are similar examples so look for these to compare quality and see that each of these statues is a one-of-a-kind artwork. Provenance: Marcel Gibrat Gallery 1225 Madison Avenue, New York, N. Y. 10028, which closed in 1991.
