Mid-20th C. Indonesian Steel Kris w/ Gilt Copper
Southeast Asia, Indonesia, ca. mid-20th century CE. A fine ceremonial kris (also keris) of a dignified style. The hand-carved wooden handle displays a pair of abstract anthropomorphic maskettes along the interior curve, and the gilt copper spacer cap is inset with eight faceted zirconium stones. The forged-steel blade exhibits a straight profile with sharpened edges, a lightly rounded point, a projecting hand guard, and a graining pattern with lighter nickel ribbons radiating away from the shallow midrib. The black-dyed wooden sheath is surmounted by a caramel-hued wooden guard protector, and the blade housing is adorned with an openwork gilt copper panel adorned with dense foliate motifs.
