Mid-20th C. Javanese Wooden Kris Handle

**First Time At Auction**

Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Central Java, Surakarta, ca. mid-20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden handle for a ceremonial sword known as a kris (keris). This style of handle is known as "kagoq" (meaning "intermediate") and has a lobed upper body and a characteristic pair of abstract anthropomorphic masks on the interior curve. Lustrous caramel-hued patina envelops the entire handle. Size: 0.75" W x 3.3" H (1.9 cm x 8.4 cm); 5.4" H (13.7 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: Estate of R. Pearson, Denver, Colorado, USA; Mr. Pearson collected from the third quarter of the 20th century until he passed away., acquired at Quinn's Auction Galleries (October 1, 2016, lot 596)
