Mid-8th C. Islamic Abbasid Stone Oil Lamp
Ancient Near East, Persia, Early to Middle Abbasid Caliphate era, ca. mid-8th to mid-10th century CE. A hand-carved stone oil lamp of a substantial form bearing a lengthy neck with a narrow wick spout on top. The octagonal body has a recessed fill hole surrounded by radiating grooves that were perhaps meant to hold a lid, and the stocky handle exhibits a broad perforation beneath a protruding thumb rest. Incised across the exterior surfaces of the body and neck are concentric linear motifs that create broad triangular and X-form motifs, and the upper periphery of the neck is adorned with evenly spaced notches.
